How to overcome the fear of your first strength training session

How to overcome the fear of your first strength training session

You probably know that “going to the gym” and “working out” are things that are going to improve your healthboth mentally and physically. Figuring out what you are meant tDO when you walk into the free weights area can make you feel really anxious.

Perhaps you’re thinking about going to the gym but are afraid, or you only use the treadmill because of some tiny voice in your brain saying:

“You need to get in shape first before you go to use those exercise machines, so you don’t look foolish.”

“As long as you don’t try anything new, you can’t mess up. Stick to what you know.”

It can be overwhelming to start strength training. If that’s how you feel, you’re not alone! So, if you REALLY want to get started, it is time to manage that unhelpful voice you may have inside your head

Remind yourself that A RARE few will judge.  Most people in the gym are feeling pretty similar to you Lots of people feel really self- conscious. They often spend more time worrying about what others are thinking about them, instead of judging what everyone else is doing. Being super fit and jacked doesn’t mean you don’t have any insecurities.

Everybody starts somewhere. Going to the gym isn’t just about looking good. You go to the gym to get stronger, more confident, and feel good about yourself. Be a badass!  The fact you are even there is much effort to keep yourself healthy and yes…feeling great is GOOD ENOUGH

Keep it slow and steady. You may find it too uncomfortable to be in the gym for an hour. That’s okay. Start with 15 minutes and gradually increase your time with each visit.

Remind yourself of the WHY. What does it mean to you to go to the gym? How is it going to have positive effect on your life? Hold your values lightly, but pursue them vigorously.

Reframe that voice inside your head. Change the narrative in your head to something more helpful. What kind words or advice would you say to a friend who has just started out? Don’t be quick to criticise yourself, instead try being nicer to yourself for a change

If you still think that the above methods cannot make you brave enough to take the first stepfind a reliable coach to guide your first session. Got a friend in the same situation? Share the cost of a private session together.

You’ll work with a coach who will learn your story and build a program that is tailor-made to your experience level and goals. Your coach will help you navigate the gym, answer the questions you might have and make sure you’re doing each movement correctly
