HOW TO PLAN YOUR OWN FITNESS DIET?

In addition to regular movement and exercise, diet is another important tool for improving your fitness levels. There’s a whole tonne of nutrition and diet information online which can seem complicated and confusing, especially as so many articles and “miracle diets” seem to completely contradict each other! To make this easier for you, we have asked our members what it is they eat in order to enhance their training and – more importantly – feel great.

“I try to eat a balanced diet of typically healthy foods, and avoid sugary processed foods when I can. I also make sure that I am eating a high amount of protein!”

“I don’t really follow a strict, specific diet. I just tend to focus on eating a balance of good foods, with lots of fruit and vegetables. I also make sure my protein intake is high – and reduce my carb intake when trying to lose weight!”

“For me, it’s important to monitor my macros because I am competing. I ensure I eat plenty of good carbs before training to keep me fuelled throughout my session. My last meal of the day is a good balance of fats, carbs and proteins – if I don’t fuel my body properly then I feel really tired and may underperform.”

“Well, I always make sure that I am getting the right amount of protein that I need – I train a lot so require a high protein intake for muscle repair. Aside from that, I just cook my meals at home from scratch – using fresh, high quality ingredients.”

High protein and a balance of good carbs and fats:

It seems that a popular opinion amongst fitness lovers is to eat a good balance of fats, carbs and proteins in order to keep their body fuelled so that they can perform optimally and just feel good. If you are doing a lot of strength training, it is important to ensure you are getting enough protein for muscle repair (roughly 1.6g-2.2g per kg of bodyweight).  Some good examples of high protein foods are fish, meats, beans, eggs, lentils and nuts.

Most importantly, eat a range of enjoyable foods and keep your diet varied and colourful! A healthy diet should be good for your body and mind. Life’s too short to weigh your cornflakes!
